The Nutcracker ballet was first performed in St. Petersburg, Russia on December 17, 1892. The ballet is based on E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1816 short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.
The Nutcracker is a story of a young girl who is given a nutcracker soldier doll as a Christmas gift by her Godfather Herr Drosselmeyer. After the excitement of her family's Christmas Eve party, she goes off to bed and dreams of her beloved Nutcracker. In her dream the Nutcracker comes to life and battles the fierce Rat King. Defeating the Rat King, the Nutcracker sends Clara off on a journey through the Land of Snow to the enchanted Kingdom of Sweets, where she is entertained by dancing sweets from around the world.
